Description

Method pipeline leads help shape the evolution of our technologies and workflows to enable productions to work more quickly and efficiently. The Production Services Pipeline Lead has purview over everything within the Information Systems realm. This includes broadly: timecard integration, HR production reports, production web framework/UIs, time logging, artist and resource scheduling tools, forecasting tools for resources, web UIs for show creation and show archival, data backup and recovery tools, and web development. 

Responsibilities
  • Lead all projects within the Information Systems area of the pipeline.
  • Meet with Information Systems department leadership to identify issues and discuss priorities.
  • Meet weekly with Head of Software and Project Manager for site to prioritize and schedule Information Systems development tasks.
  • Run regular "stand-up" meetings with developers for active development projects to confirm expected progress and identify issues.
  • Work with developers to standardize central libraries.

This will encompass matching color, lighting, and exposure of stock elements to rendered or photographed elements, matte extractions from blue/green screen photography, the transformation and warping of elements as needed, 2D/3D camera tracking, graining and degraining as necessary, paint fixes and rotoscoping, as well as matte edge processing and integration.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the tracking of CG elements so that both camera and objects match live-action footage in a 3D environment and maintain consistent shot quality
  • Report to Layout Supervisor regarding on-set supervision, the integration of on-set data, tracking details, Previz, animation support, layout scenes, and Outsource Material unification.
  • Work with production to create matchmove schedules and project targets for designated show
  • Define any specific matchmove tools required for the show and identify any additions or modifications
  • Act as the point of contact between Matchmove and show supervisors

Creature R&D Specialist

Method Studios is currently in search of a Creature R&D specialist with a focus in animation and character technology to join the Creature Department.

Responsibilities
  • Create and develop scripts and plugins for the Creature department.
  • R&D new deformation approaches, advanced methods to create rigs, creature simulations, and enhance existing Maya toolsets using python and Maya API.
  • Must have good tools design logic. Keep things as simple as possible while creating complex projects.
  • Experience working with FACS based facial rigging system is a plus.

VFX Production Coordinator

VFX Production Coordinator
Description

Method Studios is currently in search of a Production Coordinator to join its Production team. The Production Coordinator is responsible for the assignment and tracking of tasks for assigned area of responsibility. They will facilitate the movement of shots between teams, coordinate daily reviews, and communicate status updates ensuring the delivery of shots on schedule. Exact project duties are set by the Project Producer/Line Producer and/or DPM. 

Responsibilities
  • Provides administrative support to the production management team and show supervisors.
  • Schedules and tracks progress of tasks for assigned artists or sequences in the production system
  • Tracks and maintains database of revisions, omits, and shot length changes; notifies the affected crew as needed
  • Partners with other Production personnel to ensure shots are scheduled and delivered in a timely manner
  • Follows up with artists on a daily basis to ensure task deliveries remain on schedule, communicating any scheduling changes to the appropriate Artists, Supervisors and Production team as needed
  • Coordinates all client deliveries, both physical deliveries and digital deliveries via approved Client designated system (Aspera, WireDrive, etc), with I/O department (as needed)

Description

The Animator is responsible for the design and execution of high-level animation as assigned, for use in final compositing as part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. In addition, the Animator may serve as a key front-line representative of the company and who may deal directly with clients in challenging situations. Accordingly, a professional demeanor and diplomacy are important. 

Responsibilities
  • Work with the Animation Supervisor, Animation Lead and other animators, as well as Production staff to provide animated rendered sequences as required by the project

The Compositor is responsible for hands on operation of the compositing workstation. Design and execution of final composites for delivery of HD and Film projects is a daily requirement. In addition, the Compositor serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanor and diplomacy.

FX TD

FX TD
Description

The Senior FX TD is responsible for creating photorealistic “FX,” (usually some natural phenomena such as fire, water, explosions, etc), using Maya and/or Houdini and any proprietary Method technology or third-party technology.  He or she should have an advanced understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders.  This person should also be comfortable managing teams of junior artists, (including scheduling artists, interviewing artists and mentoring artists).  He or she should also be familiar with the latest techniques and technologies, and have a deep understanding of one or more specialties.  He or she should be expert in one or more FX packages, as well as being able to develop entire tools or production pipelines, as required by the project.  The Senior FX TD is also required to develop a deep understanding of the Method pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her junior artists are doing the same.

As a Groom artist, you will be responsible for creating realistic natural looking long hair, fur, or feathers for Digi Doubles, Animals, Creatures, and occasionally foliage or anything with an instance nature. Grooms need to look realistic and also well setup for motion.

  • Knowledge in how to create long hair / short fur / feathers / foliage using XGen or other equivalent toolsets.

Layout TD

Layout TD
Description

The Layout Artist creates full environments based on the instructions of the VFX and CG Supervisors using established studio tools and workflows outlined by the department Supervisor and Lead. The Layout Artist will utilize tracking/matchmove data along with on-set materials and assets output from various departments to assemble and maintain shots for FX, Lighting, Animation, DMP and Compositing departments.

Responsibilities
  • Reports to Layout Department Supervisor.
  • Based on instructions from the VFX, CG supervisors and layout lead, assemble and maintain assets into project/sequence/shot based environments.
  • Assemble tracking/matchmove data into approved environment locations using studio tools and workflows.
  • Apply retime data to any animated assets that are maintained under the layout department tasks.
  • Follow studio pipeline and workflow standards setup and maintained by the Layout department Lead and Supervisor.
  • Create entirely CG camera animation based on previs and/or details from the VFX Supervisor.
  • Include proof of scale in layout set up.
  • Created custom geometry assets when requested for lighting, FX and compositing departments
  • Attend all applicable dailies to review tasks when requested.
  • Inform the Layout Lead and Department Manager of any additional tasks or priority requests.

Description

The Lighter is responsible for hands on operation of a CG workstation to create desired lighting effects across shots and sequences. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment.  Although more of an artistic role than a technical role, some technical understanding is beneficial. The lighter must be able to balance artistic requirement with the technical limitations of the software and hardware employed.  

Responsibilities
  • Work with and support the Lead Lighter, CG Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to fulfill the creative vision of the show within technical parameters
  • Help create and/or modify lighting templates, as required
  • Troubleshoot technical production issues, as required
  • Must work within the Method pipeline and publish tools and scripts as prescribed

Look Dev Artist

Look Dev Artist
Description

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs. 

Responsibilities
  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors. 
  • Working with the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline. 
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production.
  • Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor.
  • Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
  • Work closely with Lead Lighting TD's and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.

  • Imports the tracking/layout data to appropriate application and, using established techniques and tools

Reporting to the Tracking Supervisor, the Tracking Artist is responsible for the tracking of moving objects and moving cameras, within a scene. Responsibilities include preparing and importing shots with the correct data, to ensure they are ready to be tracked, and recreating camera/object motion so that it can be published to the studio.

Responsibilities
  • Uses the tracking techniques, established by the facility, to prepare shots for production
  • Imports the motion to appropriate application and, using established techniques, sets up the shot to be tracked.
  • Tracks items moving and rotating on all axes for the duration of the shot

You will be supervising Rigging and Techanim teams, while working closely with the Modelers, Animators, Groomers, CG Supervisors and the production team. Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of Python, C++, or other development experience.
  • Experience with Front-End and GUI development, e.g. PyQT, PySide, React, Angular.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Web services, e.g. Flask, Rest API design, RabbitMQ or similar.
  • Warm, welcoming personality, strong communication and organizational skills.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Linux systems configuration and experience developing on Linux platforms.
  • Familiarity with revision control systems and collaborative development, e.g. Gitflow.

Senior Animator

Senior Animator
Description

Reporting to the Animation Supervisor, the Senior Animator is responsible for hands on operation of the CG workstation as well as additional leadership and management of the CG team. Design and execution of high level animation for use in final compositing is part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement, as well as managerial skills for providing support, both technical and otherwise for the CG team as required. In addition, the Senior Animator serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients in challenging situations. Accordingly, a professional demeanor and diplomacy are important.

Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing information and feedback to the Animation Supervisor regarding issues in the CG department
  • Assist in hiring and other HR issues related to the CG department
  • Ensure proper work flow methodology for all artists
  • Work with CG software: any or all of Maya, Softimage and Boujou for visual effects intensive projects
  • Modeling, texturing and surfacing, choreography and lighting, match moving and final rendering of CG elements
  • Maintain logs, data and work orders as required to efficiently track the status of work
  • Consult with clients and other artists on the team as required
  • Attend projects on set to provide technical information as required

The Crowd TD is responsible for creating photorealistic crowds using using Golaem, in Maya. He or she should have an advanced knowledge of crowd simulation and layout, as well as a good understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders. He or she must be detail oriented, as creating and maintaining the crowd system is complex and requires all components to work in harmony to create a complete crowd render. It is not a position well-suited to someone who considers themselves only an “artist” but is more suitable to someone who considers themselves a “technician” or “craftsperson”.

Responsibilities
  • Use Method's Maya/Golaem crowd system, to design, create, and implement show specific   crowd layouts, QC and supply to lighting, in a timely manner
  • Have an advanced ability to organize and maintain data, as crowd shots are often complex
  • Must work within the Method pipeline to publish assets, tools and scripts as prescribed
  • Must manage his/her disk space to fit within quota
  • Must follow the creative direction of the production communicated by his/her supervisors

Responsibilities

Working in a fast-paced and busy Post Production facility, the QC Technician is responsible for stringent quality control evaluation of media assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor distribution masters, internal file and Digital Cinema masters for technical audio/video impairments
  • Produce QC evaluation reports for clients listing packaging details, levels and impairments for the above materials
  • Perform general monitoring and create QA reports for file and tape
  • Rate impairments accurately, according to severity, based upon the criteria adopted by the department
  • Be consistent with descriptions and ratings, adhering to the guidelines followed by the department
  • Check masters for fixes, re-evaluate the impairment accurately and produce an updated report
  • Operate all formats and standards of VTR machines, software and related equipment
  • Be comfortable with the technology, systems and procedures used by the department

Method Studios is currently in search of a Project Manager to join its team of engineers and developers.

The successful candidate will work with the development technical leads to capture and document project requirements, produce development plans, manage the developers on a daily basis, track progress against plans and generate status and progress reports for senior management and internal clients.

You will need to have an excellent understanding of the process of software development and the tools and techniques involved. You will have worked in a commercial software development environment with teams using highly iterative, agile development processes.

Knowledge and experience of the VFX world is not required; we have plenty of that. We are interested in your skills managing software development projects in dynamic environments.

The Animation TA will support a given animation team to help facilitate how animation integrates with the other departments. For the summer 2018 term we’re looking for a talented, ambitious individual to join our Software Development/Pipeline team as Technical Director Intern. This flexible 10-12-week paid internship is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience at a top VFX studio, and a chance to learn from our talented crew of artists and software developers. You will work alongside the crew on global blockbusters, and at the end of your internship, will be well-positioned to move into any open ATD/TD or software development positions within the company.

You may work on code, tools and/or user interfaces, and you’ll be mentored by, and work alongside, developers and UI/UX specialists, learn the inner workings of a VFX pipeline and VFX production, and get experience that can help you launch into a VFX/Software Development career – including consideration for full time roles at Method Studios.

At the close of the internship you’ll have the opportunity to present your contributions to the studio’s senior technology management team, including pitching any ideas that you may have, and get the team’s feedback. You will also meet one-on-one with the Head of Software and Recruitment Manager to discuss career opportunities.

The UI/UX Intern will work to create the best experience for Production artists so that they can focus on creativity, not tools. You’ll actively follow the technology scene to keep abreast of design trends and work together with the Pipeline development team and artists to ensure our UIs are engaging, consistent, and fully-featured. The role requires a broad knowledge of web UI/UX design as well as software development.
