Crowd TD Lead

Vancouver, British Columbia, CA | Crowds Technical Direction | Full time

As a Lead Crowd TD at Method Studios, you will be responsible for leading a team of artists and other TDs in creating photorealistic crowds using Golaem, in Maya. You’ll display an expert knowledge of crowd simulation and layout, as well as a good understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders. As Lead Crowd TD, you are naturally detail oriented, as creating and maintaining the crowd system is complex and requires all components to work in harmony to create a complete crowd render. You will also have a very good understanding of rigging, texturing, modeling, motion capture, animation and general VFX project management.  

In this role, you will:

  • Create in all aspects of the crowd system including the input motion capture data, character files (rigs, models, lookdev), simulation cache data, and cloth simulation;

  • Maintain crowd documentation and provide training to artists;

  • Liaise with production both in-house and with clients;

  • Using Method's Maya/Golaem crowd system, design, create, and implement show specific crowd layouts, QC, and supply to the Lighting department;

  • Display a good or better knowledge of scripting, preferably Python;

  • Have an advanced ability to organize and maintain data, as crowd shots are often very complex;

  • Work within the Method pipeline to publish assets, tools, and scripts as prescribed;

  • Follow the creative direction of the production communicated by supervisors; 

  • Be able to balance creative requests with the resources available;

  • Work with Talent Acquisition to review and interview talent as needed;

  • Have the ability to work in a team environment under tight deadlines;

  • Solve technical problems, and/or communicate effectively to the crowd department to maintain and update the pipeline.

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Minimum four years experience as a TD, specializing in crowds;

  • Some experience leading a team of artists and technical directors;

  • Expert knowledge of Maya; 

  • Tool building and scripting knowledge (Python, hscript, mel, bash);

  • Competent knowledge of Golaem;

  • Good artistic skills;

  • Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas;

  • Ability to take directions and adapt to change; 

  • Skill at improvising and problem-solving.

It would also be helpful if you had:

  • Knowledge of motion editing software, Motionbuilder;

  • Experience in motion capture;

  • Linux and Windows experience;

  • Tool building and scripting knowledge (Python, hscript, mel, bash);

  • Knowledge of Nuke.
