Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
Method Studios was responsible for extensive 2D digital matte paintings, background replacements and enhancements; bluescreen compositing; and CG vehicles.
The London team led by VFX Supervisor Simon Carr found their biggest challenge in the opening shot of Paris. In this scene they needed to remove anachronistic elements and combine photographic elements of the city with digital matte painting enhancements. They also worked in bluescreen crowd plates and footage of a convoy of military vehicles. Because of limitations in the height at which the convoy element could be shot, the compositors needed to re-project the filmed footage onto CG geometry and shift the lighting. The team was also asked to make adjustments to the speed and travel of cars. A fine attention to detail helped the various components blend together and ensured the success of the dramatic establishing shot.
