Unsurprisingly, capturing synchronized dog swimming required extensive planning and coordination. First a large, waterproof five-foot tall tank was built, then the living room set was constructed within it and filled wit\\h three feet of water. To maintain water clarity with all the furniture, crew and animals in the tank, a filtration system would run every 30 minutes, which required breaks in shooting and limited the number of takes to capture the dog performances. Method collaborated closely with RPA and director Craig Gillespie to carefully choreograph each dog’s performance on a shot by shot basis. The canines were filmed in separate passes, with guidance from their trainer. Method then composited each pass into the hero plate, often making positional adjustments using detailed roto layered with splash elements for seamless integration.
