Method Goes Animal!

“It was this kind of very strange humor that really attracted us,” says Boyd. “This was also an ideal spot on which to use our 3D motion control system; a proprietary technique we’ve come up with. Essentially, we film the background plates first and extrapolate the appropriate camera moves. We can then combine this with the 3D animation of the kangaroos to program a motion control rig. That in turn enables us to shoot our two actors with the correct movements to lock them straight into the kangaroos. We also used our in-house fur system for rendering the kangaroos. By mixing real elements with the CG, we blurred the lines between CG and reality. These are techniques that are unique to Method Studios, and we find we’re using them more and more.”
