Look Development Artist

Summary:

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors.
  • Working with  the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production.
  • Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor.
  • Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
  • Work closely with Lead Lighting TD's and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.
  • Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically proper implementation of look developed assets
  • Keep other supervisors apprised of issues arising in pre-production and shot production and offer creative solutions to those issues.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years production experience in feature film VFX, 5+ years preferred.
  • Experience in photo-real material/surfacing look development in visual effects production.
  • Experience in shot lighting and finaling.
  • Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation
  • Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating photo-real shaders and materials.
  • A passion for highly detailed work on a mix of characters, hard-surface assets and environments.
  • Able to create photorealistic textures from reference and clean UV layouts
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality.
  • Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others
  • Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, taking direction positively from the Leads and Supervisors while keeping production staff updated on progress and scheduling conflicts.
  • Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Adobe Photoshop and a variety of rendering technologies.
  • Must have experience modifying shading network GUI's and defining templates for other artists.
  • Familiarity with zBrush, Mudbox, Crazy Bump, Mari or other texture and normal/displacement map generation is a plus.
  • Experience with Maya hair, Yeti, Shave and a Haircut, and nCloth an asset
  • Possess familiarity with asset management systems and procedures.
  • Experience with shader programming for Mental Ray and / or Renderman (RSL, Slim templates, etc.) and scripting/programming languages (python, MEL, PERL, C, C++) is a plus.
  • Linux experience preferred

CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • working in conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, Producer, and Production Manager to develop a strong and flexible CG pipeline

Modelling & Texture Artist - Senior

Reporting to the CG or VFX Supervisor, the CG Generalist will model, texture, do basic animation work, create particle and dynamic FX, light and render as required in the assigned timeframe as outlined by the Supervisor.  The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. The CG Generalist should have the ability to serves as a key front-line representative of the company and able to be able to deal directly with clients in challenging situations. Animation Supervisor

Rigging Lead

The Rigging Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the rigging pipeline, working closely with the Rigging Supervisor. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

 

The Rigging Lead is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets, and leading/mentoring other riggers.

 

The Rigging Lead will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required.

The Rigging Lead will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

 

The Rigging Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

Duties

Lead Pipeline Developer

Method Pipeline leads help shape the evolution of our technologies and workflows to enable productions to work more quickly and efficiently. The Application Pipeline Lead focuses on front-end user-facing software, guiding the design and development of artist and production tools that interface or plug in to our primary visual effects software applications. Our leads should be versatile and able to tackle new problems throughout the post-production pipeline as we push new technology forward.

Responsibilities

Work closely with pipeline supervisor, project manager, and other pipeline leads to:

  • Architect, design, and plan software development.
  • Rank, prioritize, and schedule development and bug fixing.
  • Write new code and maintain existing code in the pipeline.
  • Regularly review and assess development schedules and progress.
  • Guide other developers in building and implementing complicated projects.
  • Reuse central libraries whenever possible.
  • Amend department standards over time based on needs.
  • Make sure all code conforms to Method coding standards and conventions.
  • Perform code reviews and process pull requests.
  • Create documentation for new tools and tool updates.
  • Communicate cross-site development to avoid duplicate effort.
  • Join meetings and give demos with other sites.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years experience working in visual effects post-production pipelines
  • Expertise in Python and shell scripting.
  • Experience developing plugins for computer graphics applications (e.g. Maya, Nuke, Houdini).
  • Knowledge of Linux systems configuration and experience developing on Linux platforms.

Preferred qualifications:

VFX Supervisor

Visual Effects Supervisor

 

 

Description:

 

The Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the design and execution of visual effects work on a given project. This can include both on set supervision for acquisition of plates and elements and supervision of the shot work through post production.

In conjunction with the Visual Effects Producer, the Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the management and successful completion of the project. The Supervisor’s input will be required for issues such as artist performance and team selection, liaising with the overall project supervisor, producer, or director as required, scheduling of effects production, and estimating/bidding new work.

The Visual Effects Supervisor will also play an important role in the sales efforts for new potential projects. This could include script reading and breakdown, project time/budget estimation, attending first contact meetings and conference calls with potential clients and being able to speak definitively and clearly about the studio’s abilities, resources and culture.

 

 

Duties:

 

  • VFX supervision as required (On set / In house through post)
  • Maintain creative relations with given clients; establish strong client confidence
  • Bid shots, flag overages On set/ through post

Rigger - Senior

Working closely with the CG Supervisor and the Rigging Supervisor, the Rigger will be responsible for building robust and efficient rigs and working with the CG team to implement and support these rigs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • With the CG Supervisor, Rigging, Animation, and Modeling Leads, identify the production's specific rigging needs
  • Design efficient rigs appropriate to the production’s needs
  • Advise modeling teams on suitability of models for rigging and any changes needed

Technical Animators (cloth, hair, fur)

Method Studios Vancouver is looking for technical animators specializing in cloth, hair, and fur, to join us on current feature film projects.

The role of the Technical Animator is designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair or other specialist technology. Working under the direction of the CG Supervisor the Technical Animator collaborates with other 3D Leads including Layout, Animation, Modeling, Rigging and any other appropriate discipline.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
  • Work with Rigging and/or Layout department to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
  • Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation.
  • Analyze and fix any initial problems found and resimulate as needed.
  • Fix geometry on character animation on a shot basis using our in-house tool set
  • Deliver simulated geometry to the production pipeline for further processing.
  • Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
  • Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment.
  • Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained.

Lighters

Lighting TDs are responsible for hands-on operation of a CG workstation to create desired lighting effects across shots and sequences. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment. Although more of an artistic role than a technical role, some technical understanding is beneficial.  A Lighting TD must be able to balance artistic requirement with the technical limitations of the software and hardware employed.

Creature TD

This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

 

The Creature TD is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets. 

 

The Creature TD will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required. The Rigging Supervisor will work closely with the CG and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets. 

Responsibilities and Duties

·         Create and develop fast elegant character rigs using Maya and select proprietary tools

·         Work with Modeling and Animation departments to facilitate articulate realistic appealing characters

·         Integration of characters and rigs into the production pipeline

·         Create User Interfaces and tools to assist animators

·         Work in partnership with R&D programmers, Animators, and Lighting tds to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard

·         Provide support to character rigs throughout production

·         Develop long-term strategies to automate character production

·         Collaborate with rigging supervisors from Method's international facilities to share ideas and ensure standards and consistency

 Qualifications

·         Minimum 5 years work experience in Feature film/broadcast VFX production, with 2 or more years supervising

·         Solid knowledge of rigging systems

·         Comprehensive knowledge of Maya

·         Provide reel, demonstrating both control systems and complex deformations

·         Solid time and project management skills - accessibility and willingness to collaborate is a must

·         Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to character rigging and animation comprehension of core principles relating to rigging

Reporting to the Night Operations Manager and Director of Operations, the Mobilabs/ Dailies Operator is responsible for the creation of dailies in any of our syncing suites.
Duties Include:
? Syncing camera masters with their audio
? Applying LUTs and CDL accurately according to Production notes
? Providing ALE or other database files and accurate tape notes for all events in the session and building the notes package that will be sent to the client
? Generating editorial media
? Generating viewing media (ex. QT’s and DVD’s)
? Uploading/transmission of all media created in the session as per project specific requirements

Senior Systems Engineer

The primary focus of the Systems Engineer role is in systems architecture and infrastructure engineering. The candidate will require expertise in systems administration and architecture along with foundational programming ability. Candidate will work to implement and improve the existing in-house infrastructure, as well as integrate and maintain various third-party systems and products. Compositing Lead - Start April

Compositing Lead

 

The Compositing Lead manages both hands-on operation of a workstation as well as administration duties. Working closely with the Compositing Supervisor, the Compositing Lead aids with of project setup: show slate creation, tools (macros/plug-ins unique for a given show’s needs), establishing protocol for acquisition of plates and elements and establishing formats for dailies reviews. The Compositing Lead also helps with quality control and assisting artists, checking colour continuity for sequences and making luts for plates or Avid delivery.

The Compositing Lead reviews and reports the artists’ progress to the Composting Supervisor and Head of 2D on a regular basis.

The Compositing Lead occasionally serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanor and diplomacy.

 

Duties include:

·         Ensure that the quality of the work from the compositing team is of the highest of standards

·         Ensure proper work flow methodology for all artists - mentor the compositing team

·         Provide ongoing information and feedback to the Head of 2D and Composting Supervisor regarding issues in the Compositing department

·         Composite with Nuke

 

Qualifications:

·         Expert knowledge Nuke

·         High level feature film experience in live action films

·         Complete understanding of color correction, blue & green screen, roto, mattes and tracking technologies

·         Guru level experience in Compositing

Core technical knowledge:
