Look Development Artist

Summary:

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors.
  • Working with  the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production.
  • Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor.
  • Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
  • Work closely with Lead Lighting TD's and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.
  • Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically proper implementation of look developed assets
  • Keep other supervisors apprised of issues arising in pre-production and shot production and offer creative solutions to those issues.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years production experience in feature film VFX, 5+ years preferred.
  • Experience in photo-real material/surfacing look development in visual effects production.
  • Experience in shot lighting and finaling.
  • Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation
  • Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating photo-real shaders and materials.
  • A passion for highly detailed work on a mix of characters, hard-surface assets and environments.
  • Able to create photorealistic textures from reference and clean UV layouts
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality.
  • Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others
  • Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, taking direction positively from the Leads and Supervisors while keeping production staff updated on progress and scheduling conflicts.
  • Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Adobe Photoshop and a variety of rendering technologies.
  • Must have experience modifying shading network GUI's and defining templates for other artists.
  • Familiarity with zBrush, Mudbox, Crazy Bump, Mari or other texture and normal/displacement map generation is a plus.
  • Experience with Maya hair, Yeti, Shave and a Haircut, and nCloth an asset
  • Possess familiarity with asset management systems and procedures.
  • Experience with shader programming for Mental Ray and / or Renderman (RSL, Slim templates, etc.) and scripting/programming languages (python, MEL, PERL, C, C++) is a plus.

CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • working in conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, Producer, and Production Manager to develop a strong and flexible CG pipeline
  • working with the Project Coordinator and Producer to facilitate the scheduling of artists and resources

Modelling & Texture Artist - Senior

Reporting to the CG or VFX Supervisor, the CG Generalist will model, texture, do basic animation work, create particle and dynamic FX, light and render as required in the assigned timeframe as outlined by the Supervisor.  The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. The CG Generalist should have the ability to serves as a key front-line representative of the company and able to be able to deal directly with clients in challenging situations. Accordingly, a professional demeanour and diplomacy are important.

Animation Supervisor

Reporting to the Visual Effects Supervisor, the Animator Supervisor is responsible for leadership and management of the CG team. Design and execution of high level animation for use in final compositing is part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement, as well as managerial skills for providing support, both technical and otherwise for the CG team as required. In addition, the Animation Supervisor serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients in challenging situations. Rigging Lead

The Rigging Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the rigging pipeline, working closely with the Rigging Supervisor. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

 

The Rigging Lead is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets, and leading/mentoring other riggers.

 

The Rigging Lead will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required.

The Rigging Lead will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

 

The Rigging Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

VFX Supervisor

Visual Effects Supervisor

 

 

Description:

 

The Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the design and execution of visual effects work on a given project. This can include both on set supervision for acquisition of plates and elements and supervision of the shot work through post production.

In conjunction with the Visual Effects Producer, the Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the management and successful completion of the project. The Supervisor’s input will be required for issues such as artist performance and team selection, liaising with the overall project supervisor, producer, or director as required, scheduling of effects production, and estimating/bidding new work.

The Visual Effects Supervisor will also play an important role in the sales efforts for new potential projects. This could include script reading and breakdown, project time/budget estimation, attending first contact meetings and conference calls with potential clients and being able to speak definitively and clearly about the studio’s abilities, resources and culture.

 

 

Duties:

 

  • VFX supervision as required (On set / In house through post)

Rigger - Senior

Working closely with the CG Supervisor and the Rigging Supervisor, the Rigger will be responsible for building robust and efficient rigs and working with the CG team to implement and support these rigs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • With the CG Supervisor, Rigging, Animation, and Modeling Leads, identify the production's specific rigging needs
  • Design efficient rigs appropriate to the production’s needs
  • Advise modeling teams on suitability of models for rigging and any changes needed
  • Work with the CG team implementing the rigs and rigging the assets

Senior Systems Engineer

The primary focus of the Systems Engineer role is in systems architecture and infrastructure engineering. The candidate will require expertise in systems administration and architecture along with foundational programming ability. Render Technician

Responsibilities

Reporting to the I/O Supervisor and Technical Operations Manager, the Render Technician will be responsible for render farm management and supporting  backup and archive operations.  This role offers excellent opportunities for the right individual to acquire a broad based knowledge of Visual Effects procedures within a production environment.

 

Duties

·         Communicate with productions to efficiently monitor and manage the render farm processes and priorities

·         Quickly solve any rendering issues, ensuring all 2D and 3D rendering jobs are completed on schedule.

Studio Operations Coordinator

Studio Operations Coordinator reports to the Studio Operations Manager and coordinates various operations to ensure the daily running of the Visual FX studio.

 

Operations

·         Coordinate and oversee production related moves within the facility. This includes coordinating the movement of desks, chairs and Visual FX computer equipment throughout the facility. Involves liaising between I.T, Facilities and Production.

·         Coordinate the inventory and ordering of operational equipment/supplies and (when required) assistance in ordering computer equipment for the studio.

·         Representative of Health and Safety Committee.

Public Relations & Programs

Finance

Producer

Reporting to the Executive Producer, the Visual Effects Producer is responsible and holds the key role for managing the production and workflow of feature film visual effects for the facility, while actively liaising as the senior point of contact with the Studio (client). The Visual Effects Producer will plan the organization of the artist establishment, team implementation, building and nurturing, and overall scheduling of the artists. The Visual Effects Producer must implement the systems necessary to achieve the final product of visual effects shots and sequences for feature films in a time sensitive environment.

 

The Visual Effects Producer oversees the management of cost reporting and maintains the budget and schedule through change orders with the studio when applicable. The Visual Effects Producer also works intimately with the Visual Effects Supervisor and Digital Effects Supervisor, driving the technical pipeline established to achieve the desired effects, and helping to oversee that any proprietary systems or computer code needed on the project be engineered within the necessary time frame.

 

Other responsibilities include management of information flow, preparing and executing large VFX budgets generally exceeding $1,000,000, breaking down scripts, initiating and fielding studio and production calls, invoices and payments, and overseeing contract responsibilities with the client. The requirement to act as a backup for the Visual Effects Supervisor in house or on set may arise from time to time.

 

The Visual Effects Producer will also be called upon to assist in setting up and maintaining systems for in-house information flow and retrieval custom to the project and project management, in concert with the Executive Producer. The Visual Effects Producer should always be looking for ways to streamline and improve communication and information flow as it pertains to VFX projects.

 

In addition, the Visual Effects Producer serves as a key front-line representative of the company interfacing directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanour, diplomacy, and confidentiality of the information shared between the two parties.

Technical Animation Supervisor

The Technical Animation Supervisor is responsible for the smooth running of the technical animation (cloth, fur, hair) pipeline for a project, working closely with the Rigging, Technical Animation, and CG Supervisors. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

The Technical Animation supervisor would also be designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair, fur or other specialist technology. They will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that the technical animation team have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Technical Animation Supervisor should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead/supervise the team of technical animators to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
  • Work with Rigging and Animation departments to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
  • Working with Production, assign technical animation tasks to appropriate artists
  • Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation.
