Description

CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • working in conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, Producer, and Production Manager to develop a strong and flexible CG pipeline
  • working with the Project Coordinator and Producer to facilitate the scheduling of artists and resources
  • working with the VFX Supervisors to provide artistic and technical notes to the team
  • developing, maintaining, and/or approving 3D techniques
  • providing team-building by developing structure
  • leading artists, while delegating roles and responsibilities
  • following CG elements from concept through to final comp, overseeing all elements created by the CG team

Rigging Supervisor

The Rigging Supervisor is responsible for the smooth running of the rigging pipeline. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation.

The Rigging Supervisor is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets.

The Rigging Supervisor will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required. The Rigging Supervisor will work closely with the CG and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Rigging Supervisor should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create and develop fast elegant character rigs using Maya and select proprietary tools
  • Work with Modeling and Animation departments to facilitate articulate realistic appealing characters
  • Integration of characters and rigs into the production pipeline
  • Create User Interfaces and tools to assist animators

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years work experience in Feature film/broadcast VFX production, with 2 or more years supervising

  • Provide reel, demonstrating both control systems and complex deformations
  • Solid time and project management skills - accessibility and willingness to collaborate is a must
  • Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to character rigging and animation comprehension of core principles relating to rigging

Pipeline Lead -- 3D Front End

Method pipeline leads help shape the evolution of our technologies and workflows to enable productions to work more quickly and efficiently. The 3D Front End Pipeline Lead has purview over everything within the 3D Front End realm. This includes broadly:

Technical Animator

The role of the Technical Animator is designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair or other specialist technology. Working under the direction of the CG Supervisor, the Technical Animator collaborates with other 3D Leads including Layout, Animation, Modeling, Rigging and any other appropriate discipline.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
  • Work with Rigging and/or Layout department to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
  • Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation
  • Analyze and fix any initial problems found and re-simulate as needed
  • Deliver simulated geometry to the production pipeline for further processing
  • Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
  • Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment
  • Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained
  • Optimize simulations to ensure best throughput including automating pinning of geometry etc.

Qualifications

Senior Texture Artist

Reporting to the Model or Texture Lead and/or to the CG Supervisor (per project), the Senior Texture Artist will create textures as assigned by the CG Supervisor. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create textures as assigned by Supervisor, following the creative direction of the production
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Ensure all working files are efficiently organized and that all work complies with the studio’s technical standards and specifications

Animator

The Animator is responsible for the design and execution of high-level animation as assigned, for use in final compositing as part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. In addition, the Animator may serve as a key front-line representative of the company and who may deal directly with clients in challenging situations.   • Work with the Animation Supervisor, Animation Lead and other animators, as well as Production staff to provide animated rendered sequences as required by the project
  • Animate in various styles (creatures, realistic humans, motion capture, vehicles, etc.) as required by projects
  • Work with animation software (Maya) for visual effects intensive projects
  • Investigate and keep up to date on new and competing software packages and technology
  • Test provided rigs and giving appropriate feedback
  • Work closely with other departments on issues that affect the animation team, and vice versa
  • Modeling, texturing and surfacing, choreography, lighting, match moving and final rendering of CG elements if skills applicable, as needed

VFX Production Coordinator

Reporting to the Production Manager, Visual Effects, the VFX Production Coordinator is responsible for the management of information flow during a project. Taking client requests, recording client notes, and monitoring the progress of the crew are all part of the daily responsibilities of the VFX Production Coordinator.

In addition, the VFX Production Coordinator serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanor and diplomacy.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with production team and Pipeline to set up Shotgun
  • Ensure clear file structure is in place, create shot directories for all shots. As show progresses, keep on top of new directory needs, and work with artists to create directories when necessary
  • Participate in show set-up meetings, take notes from these meetings and confirm that all stages of set-up are documented and assigned
  • Introduce new artists to Shotgun and timesheets, ensure the crew is familiar with show procedures.  Ensure that all crew are added to appropriate email groups
  • Work with Method IO to set up data transfer procedures.  Upload and download material from ftp site / aspera, or establish how Method IO will handle downloads if appropriate
  • Monitor plate turnover dates and liaise with studio data team when plates come in
  • Maintain list of all roto and matchmove requests and target dates and completion status. Liaise with roto/mm coordinator to set priorities
  • Maintain database of shot data to include all material sent from client and request any missing material from client
  • Set up and maintain shot board
  • Work with supervisor and producer to create dailies playlist.  Work with editor to prepare dailies material before artists are in the theatre. Notify relevant artists when it is time to be in dailies. Let crew know if dailies is canceled or delayed
  • Take notes during dailies and review with supervisor before publishing to the crew.   Ensure all dailies notes are input into Shotgun and emailed to relevant artists and established email groups
  • Book rooms for client calls and meetings, and maintain all calendar events per production team
  • Set up cinesync sessions with proper playlist material established by client and supervisor.  Save and file all notes and cinesync images, review with supervisor and distribute appropriately
  • Participate in daily production meetings and artist rounds with production team and follow up on notes and action items that come from these
  • Walk the floor, gather artist needs, follow-up on action items. Have a general idea of what the team is working on; inform producer/supervisor when they know of issues that are happening on the floor
  • Maintain current list of all shots statuses and task assignments (through Shotgun and other means.)
  • Make sure artists are aware of targets and assure that they have all info and materials they need, and help them get it if they don’t
  • Create daily posting targets list and ensure all relevant artists are aware of targets.  Maintain communication to know when material is ready for review by supervisor, and notify producer if any targets will be missed
  • Complete submission forms per client specifications, and submit with every submission to client. Fling shots for delivery to client, prep any paper work that needs to go with it and update shotgun to reflect what’s been delivered
  • Collect client feedback and input into Shotgun, and notify relevant artists and email groups
  • Manage render farm priorities: work with crew to establish render needs, and with studio wranglers to ensure that available resource matches needs
  • Collect timesheets from crew, ensure they’re all complete and pass to producer for review and approval
  • Help with ordering / organizing lunch / dinner when working OT
  • On completion of project, ensure that all shot finals and plates are copied to the studio library/finals area.

Tracking Artist

Reporting to the Tracking Supervisor, the Tracking Artist is responsible for the tracking of moving objects and moving cameras, within a scene. Responsibilities include preparing and importing shots with the correct data, to ensure they are ready to be tracked, and recreating camera/object motion so that it can be published to the studio.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses the tracking techniques, established by the facility, to prepare shots for production
  • Imports the motion to appropriate application and, using established techniques, sets up the shot to be tracked
  • Tracks items moving and rotating on all axes for the duration of the shot
  • Uses the required tracking software to re-create camera or object motion. Where auto-tracking will not work, the Tracking Artist will hand-track the camera track or object
  • Manages notes from Supervisor and ensure they are applied
  • Once tracking is complete, the tracked camera/object will go through the layout process, QC and published to the studio


Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience
  • Experience in tracking software such as 3DEqualizer, PFTrack is essential
  • Knowledge of Maya, Nuke, and Houdini is an asset
  • Able to take directions and adaptable to change
  • Good at improvising and problem-solving

Compositor

The Compositor is responsible for hands on operation of the compositing workstation. Design and execution of final composites for delivery of HD and Film projects is a daily requirement. Digital Effects (DFX) Supervisor

The Digital Effects (DFX) Supervisor ensures throughput of shots towards timely completion, via client’s approval, and maintains a functioning environment where the DFX Supervisor and client can focus on artistic performance without technology hindrance. The DFX Supervisor works with the VFX Supervisor, Producer and Production Manager and is responsible for developing a strong, flexible CG and 2D pipeline. Rigger

Working closely with the CG Supervisor and the Rigging Supervisor, the Rigger will be responsible for building robust and efficient rigs and working with the CG team to implement and support these rigs.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • With the CG Supervisor, Rigging, Animation, and Modeling Leads, identify the production's specific rigging needs
  • Design efficient rigs appropriate to the production’s needs
  • Advise modeling teams on suitability of models for rigging and any changes needed
  • Work with the CG team implementing the rigs and rigging the assets
  • Design and implement scripted solutions for maximum speed and efficiency of rigging
  • Work with leads and supervisors in the testing of rigged assets
  • During production, support all the rigged assets


Qualifications

  • Rigging knowledge in industry production software such as Maya or Houdini
  • Knowledge of other packages an asset, such as Motion Builder
  • Must have some experience as a rigger on high-end feature film productions
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills required

Layout TD

The Layout TD creates full environments based on the instructions of the VFX and CG Supervisors using established studio tools and workflows outlined by the department Supervisor and Lead. The Layout TD will utilize tracking/matchmove data along with on-set materials and assets output from various departments to assemble and maintain shots for FX, Lighting, Animation, DMP and Compositing departments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Report to Layout Department Supervisor
  • Based on instructions from the VFX, CG supervisors and layout lead, assemble and maintain assets into project/sequence/shot based environments
  • Assemble tracking/matchmove data into approved environment locations using studio tools and workflows
  • Apply retime data to any animated assets that are maintained under the layout department tasks
  • Follow studio pipeline and workflow standards setup and maintained by the Layout department Lead and Supervisor
  • Create entirely CG camera animation based on previs and/or details from the VFX Supervisor
  • Include proof of scale in layout set up
  • Created custom geometry assets when requested for lighting, FX and compositing departments
  • Attend all applicable dailies to review tasks when requested
  • Inform the Layout Lead and Department Manager of any additional tasks or priority requests
  • Contribute animation, rotomation, modeling and Previz skills when needed
  • Process on-set data when required, including photogrammerty, Totalstation, Lidar data for use in tracking, modeling and lookdev
  • Create proxy props and other models based on supplied set data/Totalstation/Lidar scans or other available survey information
  • Based on project requirements and studio resources, travel to on-set locations for data collection may be required
     

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-3+ years VFX layout experience on feature films required
  • Strong knowledge of Maya with skills in cameras, modeling, animation and rendering
  • Knowledge of Houdini, Nuke, Vray, Zbrush, Speedtree essential
  • Scripting abilities in python and MEL a plus
  • Understanding of tracking/matchmove concepts and software including 3DEqualizer, Pftrack or Boujou

Look Development Artist

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors.
  • Working with the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.

Technical Animation Lead

The Technical Animation Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the technical animation (cloth, fur, hair) pipeline for a project, working closely with the Rigging, Technical Animation, and CG Supervisors. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

The Technical Animation Lead would also be designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair, fur or other specialist technology. They will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that the technical animation team have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Technical Animation Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

Groom Artist

As a Groom artist, you will be responsible for creating realistic natural looking long hair, fur, or feathers for Digi Doubles, Animals, Creatures, and occasionally foliage or anything with an instance nature. Grooms need to look realistic and also well setup for motion.

Shipper/Receiver - Encore Post

The Shipper/Receiver is responsible for the inventorying, maintenance and management of the Vault Department for a large and growling Post Production/VFX studio. Organized, professional and customer-service focused, this person is detail oriented and able to work efficiently within a team environment.

Possessing a sense of urgency, the Shipper/Receiver demonstrates an ability to work within a fast-paced and collaborative environment, deliver accurate and quality work on schedule, and has excellent skills in building relationships and communicating effectively.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Responsible for all incoming and outgoing physical assets, utilizing tracking software to inventory and then allocate to the correct department/personnel within the facility. The assets are time-sensitive and confidential, and must be handled accordingly.
  • Review and implement physical asset protocols for various Production cycles.
  • Coordinates with the Dailies and IO department to organize the daily physical deliverables of local Productions and review for errors before passing to clients.  
  • Organize local couriers to pick up and deliver physical assets.
  • Organize national and international shipments using a variety of shipping methods: courier (Fedex, UPS, DHL, etc.,) freight forwarding companies or Brokers. Ensure secure and proper packaging and accurately complete necessary paperwork to ensure timely delivery without delays.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and IO Department to organize physical media backups. Label and create shipping schedules of client media backups and execute accordingly.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Dubbing Department to ship outgoing tape deliverables.
  • Organize and maintain physical element Library. Maintain accurate databases to meet client and facility standards. 
  • Organize incoming and outgoing electronics/computer shipments for the IT Department.
  • Maintain Lab Access Agreements and liaison with the Legal and Sales Departments to ensure proper storage and release of client assets.
  • Work with the Accounting Department to ensure vendor shipping invoices are efficiently organized and maintained.
  • Handle incoming shipments of supplies for the facility.
  • Experience with MetaVault Library Software tracking systems, such as Xytech and Atlas Confluence/JIRA would be considered an asset.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ensure absolute confidentiality and security of client physical assets.
  • Some physical labour (boxes, Pelican cases) will be required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to collaborate with others.
  • Able to plan, prioritize, and manage competing priorities as well as meet deadlines.

This is a full-time position with a fixed daytime shift, although overtime and weekends may be required.
