Description

Look Development Artist

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors
  • Working with  the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production
  • Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor
  • Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
  • Work closely with Lead Lighting TD's and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements
  • Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically proper implementation of look developed assets
  • Keep other supervisors apprised of issues arising in pre-production and shot production and offer creative solutions to those issues


Qualifications

  • 3+ years production experience in feature film VFX, 5+ years preferred
  • Experience in photo-real material/surfacing look development in visual effects production
  • Experience in shot lighting and finaling
  • Experience with fur and hair grooming and cloth simulation
  • Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating photo-real shaders and materials
  • A passion for highly detailed work on a mix of characters, hard-surface assets and environments
  • Able to create photorealistic textures from reference and clean UV layouts
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround with achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality
  • Be willing to share knowledge and experience with others
  • Must possess strong initiative, excellent communication, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, taking direction positively from the Leads and Supervisors while keeping production staff updated on progress and scheduling conflicts
  • Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Adobe Photoshop and a variety of rendering technologies
  • Must have experience modifying shading network GUI's and defining templates for other artists
  • Familiarity with zBrush, Mudbox, Crazy Bump, Mari or other texture and normal/displacement map generation is a plus
  • Experience with Maya hair, Yeti, Shave and a Haircut, and nCloth an asset
  • Possess familiarity with asset management systems and procedures
  • Experience with shader programming for Mental Ray and / or Renderman (RSL, Slim templates, etc.) and scripting/programming languages (python, MEL, PERL, C, C++) is a plus

CG Supervisor

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • working in conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, Producer, and Production Manager to develop a strong and flexible CG pipeline
  • working with the Project Coordinator and Producer to facilitate the scheduling of artists and resources

Software knowledge

Rigging Lead

The Rigging Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the rigging pipeline, working closely with the Rigging Supervisor. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

The Rigging Lead is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets, and leading/mentoring other riggers.

 The Rigging Lead will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required.

The Rigging Lead will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Rigging Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

VFX Supervisor

The Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the design and execution of visual effects work on a given project. This can include both on set supervision for acquisition of plates and elements and supervision of the shot work through post production. 

In conjunction with the Visual Effects Producer, the Visual Effects Supervisor is responsible for the management and successful completion of the project. The Supervisor’s input will be required for issues such as artist performance and team selection, liaising with the overall project supervisor, producer, or director as required, scheduling of effects production, and estimating/bidding new work.

The Visual Effects Supervisor will also play an important role in the sales efforts for new potential projects. This could include script reading and breakdown, project time/budget estimation, attending first contact meetings and conference calls with potential clients and being able to speak definitively and clearly about the studio’s abilities, resources and culture.

Technical Animation Supervisor

The Technical Animation Supervisor is responsible for the smooth running of the technical animation (cloth, fur, hair) pipeline for a project, working closely with the Rigging, Technical Animation, and CG Supervisors. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. The Technical Animation supervisor would also be designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair, fur or other specialist technology. They will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that the technical animation team have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Technical Animation Supervisor should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead/supervise the team of technical animators to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
  • Work with Rigging and Animation departments to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
  • Work with Production, assign technical animation tasks to appropriate artists
  • Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation
  • Analyze and fix any initial problems found and resimulate as needed
  • Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
  • Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment
  • Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained
  • Research, develop, implement or adapt existing technical animation solution that best fits the show needs with the available resource and prevent problems by communicating early with stakeholders and coming up with solutions that are both efficient and technically sound
  • Initiate and maintain clear communication with Department Lead / Supervisor regarding project status and potential issues that might arise

Qualifications

  • Good working knowledge in a production environment with Maya
  • Self-sufficient and can manage both his / her own time and needs of the team in order to meet project deadlines
  • Houdini knowledge a plus
  • Good working knowledge of hair, fur, and cloth simulation software such as Yeti, Shave & a Haircut, Xgen, nCloth, and Marvelous Designer

Houdini FX TD - Seniors/Leads


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, create, and implement photo-real effects (water, dust, fire, smoke, explosions, debris, clouds, etc.) and systems that meet all technical and aesthetic standards for the project
  • Work within the show structure and production deadlines to complete all tasks
  • Integrate created elements into scenes with lighting, shadows, reflections, etc.
  • Provide full spec for tool before development if spec not provided

Matchmove Tracking Artist

Reporting to the Matchmove Tracking Supervisor, the MatchmoveTracking Artist is responsible for the tracking of moving objects and moving cameras, within a scene. Responsibilities include preparing and importing shots with the correct data, to ensure they are ready to be tracked, and recreating camera/object motion so that it can be published to the studio.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Use the tracking techniques established by the facility to prepare shots for production
  • Import the motion to appropriate application and, using established techniques, set up the shot to be tracked
  • Track items moving and rotating on all axes for the duration of the shot
  • Use the required tracking software to re-create camera or object motion. Where auto-tracking will not work, the Tracking Artist will hand-track the camera track or object
  • Manage notes from Supervisor and ensure they are applied
  • Once tracking is complete, the tracked camera/object will go through the layout process, QC and published to the studio


Qualifications 

  • Experience in tracking software such as 3DEqualizer, PFTrack is essential
  • Knowledge of Maya, Nuke, and Houdini is an asset
  • Able to take directions and adaptable to change
  • Good at improvising and problem-solving

VFX Producer

Reporting to the Head of Production, the VFX Producer is responsible for facilitating the bidding process and the management of information flow for VFX projects. Attending client meetings, breaking down scripts, preparing bids, taking client requests, recording client notes, generating schedules, invoices and work orders are all part of the daily responsibilities of the VFX Producer.

The VFX Producer will also be called upon to assist in setting up and maintaining systems for in-house information flow and retrieval, and project management, in concert with the Supervising Producer. The VFX producer should always be looking for ways to streamline and improve communication and information flow as it pertains to VFX projects.

Additionally, the VFX Producer serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. This direct client interaction requires a highly professional demeanor and diplomacy.

  •  Working with the VFX Supervisor and production management team to formulate project bids and breakdowns
  • Creating and maintaining the overall production schedule and project databases
  • Managing the client relationship and expectations in a diplomatic and professional manner
  •  Overseeing production coordinators to ensure the accurate production tracking of all shots through the pipeline to completion and client delivery

  • Monitor plate turnover dates and liaise with studio data team when plates come in

Tracking Artist

Reporting to the Tracking Supervisor, the Tracking Artist is responsible for the tracking of moving objects and moving cameras, within a scene. Responsibilities include preparing and importing shots with the correct data, to ensure they are ready to be tracked, and recreating camera/object motion so that it can be published to the studio.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses the tracking techniques, established by the facility, to prepare shots for production
  • Imports the motion to appropriate application and, using established techniques, sets up the shot to be tracked

Digital Effects (DFX) Supervisor

The Digital Effects (DFX) Supervisor ensures throughput of shots towards timely completion, via client’s approval, and maintains a functioning environment where the DFX Supervisor and client can focus on artistic performance without technology hindrance. The DFX Supervisor works with the VFX Supervisor, Producer and Production Manager and is responsible for developing a strong, flexible CG and 2D pipeline.
