Description

Pipeline Lead -- 3D Front End

Method pipeline leads help shape the evolution of our technologies and workflows to enable productions to work more quickly and efficiently. The 3D Front End Pipeline Lead has purview over everything within the 3D Front End realm. This includes broadly:

  • Modeling
  • Animation
  • Crowds
  • Layout
  • Tracking / Matchmoving
  • Technical Animation
  • Cloth
  • Hair Groom and Simulation


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead all projects withing the 3D Front End area of the pipeline
  • Meet with 3D Front End department leadership to identify issues and discuss priorities
  • Meet weekly with Head of Software and Project Manager for site to prioritize and schedule 3D Front End development tasks
  • Openly communicate schedule to software department and 3D Front End production leadership
  • Run regular "stand-up" meetings with developers for active development projects to confirm expected progress and identify issues
  • Work with developers to standardize central libraries
  • Architect, design, and plan software development
  • Guide other developers in building and implementing complex projects
  • Amend department standards over time based on needs
  • Get involved in code reviews and process pull requests
  • Provide point-of-contact from show pipeline support about 3D Front End pipeline
  • Meet one-on-one with each 3D Front End developer on a regular basis to provide and receive feedback
  • Work with developers to setup demos and communicate updates, new tools, and bugs to all of production
  • Quarterly travel to other Method sites to meet with developers and users.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 5 years of experience in VFX development
  • 5+ years of Python experience
  • In-depth experience with Autodesk Maya
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working directly with production teams
  • Familiarity with other VFX applications (RV, Flame, Avid, Nuke, Houdini)

Technical Animator

The role of the Technical Animator is designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair or other specialist technology. Working under the direction of the CG Supervisor, the Technical Animator collaborates with other 3D Leads including Layout, Animation, Modeling, Rigging and any other appropriate discipline.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with Model department to ensure geometry being simulated meets Technical Animation needs
  • Work with Rigging and/or Layout department to ensure geometry or rigs delivered to Technical Animation meets needs
  • Apply and simulate clothing, hair or other areas requiring technical animation
  • Analyze and fix any initial problems found and re-simulate as needed
  • Deliver simulated geometry to the production pipeline for further processing
  • Ensure that geometry delivered to production pipeline meets each department’s needs
  • Develop techniques to ensure the requested animated geometry will integrate into a photorealistic environment
  • Respond quickly to notes from the VFX/DFX or CG Supervisor(s) before or during dailies to ensure best possible quality is maintained
  • Optimize simulations to ensure best throughput including automating pinning of geometry etc.

Qualifications

  • Good working knowledge in a production environment with Maya
  • Houdini knowledge a plus

Animator

The Animator is responsible for the design and execution of high-level animation as assigned, for use in final compositing as part of the daily work. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement. In addition, the Animator may serve as a key front-line representative of the company and who may deal directly with clients in challenging situations. Accordingly, a professional demeanor and diplomacy are important.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with the Animation Supervisor, Animation Lead and other animators, as well as Production staff to provide animated rendered sequences as required by the project
  • Animate in various styles (creatures, realistic humans, motion capture, vehicles, etc.) as required by projects
  • Work with animation software (Maya) for visual effects intensive projects
  • Investigate and keep up to date on new and competing software packages and technology
  • Test provided rigs and giving appropriate feedback
  • Work closely with other departments on issues that affect the animation team, and vice versa
  • Modeling, texturing and surfacing, choreography, lighting, match moving and final rendering of CG elements if skills applicable, as needed
  • Other miscellaneous duties as required from time-to-time by the Animation Supervisor or Animation Lead as needed


Qualifications

  • Knowledge and work experience in Maya required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in character and creature animation
  • Experience in live action animation (television or film) preferred

Tracking Artist

Reporting to the Tracking Supervisor, the Tracking Artist is responsible for the tracking of moving objects and moving cameras, within a scene. Responsibilities include preparing and importing shots with the correct data, to ensure they are ready to be tracked, and recreating camera/object motion so that it can be published to the studio.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses the tracking techniques, established by the facility, to prepare shots for production
  • Imports the motion to appropriate application and, using established techniques, sets up the shot to be tracked
  • Tracks items moving and rotating on all axes for the duration of the shot
  • Uses the required tracking software to re-create camera or object motion. Where auto-tracking will not work, the Tracking Artist will hand-track the camera track or object
  • Manages notes from Supervisor and ensure they are applied
  • Once tracking is complete, the tracked camera/object will go through the layout process, QC and published to the studio


Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience
  • Experience in tracking software such as 3DEqualizer, PFTrack is essential
  • Knowledge of Maya, Nuke, and Houdini is an asset

Compositor

The Compositor is responsible for hands on operation of the compositing workstation. Design and execution of final composites for delivery of HD and Film projects is a daily requirement. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment. In addition, the Compositor serves as a key front-line representative of the company and frequently deals directly with clients. Rigger

Working closely with the CG Supervisor and the Rigging Supervisor, the Rigger will be responsible for building robust and efficient rigs and working with the CG team to implement and support these rigs.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • With the CG Supervisor, Rigging, Animation, and Modeling Leads, identify the production's specific rigging needs
  • Design efficient rigs appropriate to the production’s needs
  • Advise modeling teams on suitability of models for rigging and any changes needed
  • Work with the CG team implementing the rigs and rigging the assets
  • Design and implement scripted solutions for maximum speed and efficiency of rigging
  • Work with leads and supervisors in the testing of rigged assets
  • During production, support all the rigged assets


Qualifications

Layout TD

The Layout TD creates full environments based on the instructions of the VFX and CG Supervisors using established studio tools and workflows outlined by the department Supervisor and Lead. The Layout TD will utilize tracking/matchmove data along with on-set materials and assets output from various departments to assemble and maintain shots for FX, Lighting, Animation, DMP and Compositing departments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Report to Layout Department Supervisor
  • Based on instructions from the VFX, CG supervisors and layout lead, assemble and maintain assets into project/sequence/shot based environments
  • Assemble tracking/matchmove data into approved environment locations using studio tools and workflows
  • Apply retime data to any animated assets that are maintained under the layout department tasks
  • Follow studio pipeline and workflow standards setup and maintained by the Layout department Lead and Supervisor
  • Create entirely CG camera animation based on previs and/or details from the VFX Supervisor
  • Include proof of scale in layout set up
  • Created custom geometry assets when requested for lighting, FX and compositing departments
  • Attend all applicable dailies to review tasks when requested
  • Inform the Layout Lead and Department Manager of any additional tasks or priority requests
  • Contribute animation, rotomation, modeling and Previz skills when needed
  • Process on-set data when required, including photogrammerty, Totalstation, Lidar data for use in tracking, modeling and lookdev
  • Create proxy props and other models based on supplied set data/Totalstation/Lidar scans or other available survey information
  • Based on project requirements and studio resources, travel to on-set locations for data collection may be required
     

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-3+ years VFX layout experience on feature films required
  • Strong knowledge of Maya with skills in cameras, modeling, animation and rendering
  • Knowledge of Houdini, Nuke, Vray, Zbrush, Speedtree essential
  • Scripting abilities in python and MEL a plus
  • Understanding of tracking/matchmove concepts and software including 3DEqualizer, Pftrack or Boujou

Digital Matte Painter (DMP)

The DMP is responsible for hands-on operation of a CG workstation to create efficient and photorealistic CG environments to be used across shots and sequences. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment.  A DMP Artist must be able to balance artistic needs with the production requirements and technical limitations of the software and hardware employed.  This is a cross-discipline role and requires exceptional abilities in modeling, matte/texture painting, lighting, rendering, shader writing and compositing, as well as a strong understanding of all facets of a CG production including colour.  This position requires constant attention to creating and enhancing efficiencies in the Method environment pipeline, and as such requires a person with a strong commitment to teamwork and technical excellence.

Pipeline TD - Assistant (ATD)

Method Studios is an international visual effects company, with recent credits including: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Spiderman: Homecoming and Okja.  We are looking for talented, ambitious individuals to join our team as Assistant Technical Directors (ATD’s) and eventually proceed into full TD or development positions within the company.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with production teams, artists, and supervisors to gather information.
  • Diagnose technical issues and address them directly or escalate to the pipeline team.
  • Debug problematic scenes in Maya, Houdini, Nuke, and other packages.
  • Validate issues of artists and clearly express technical issues that come from artists in a way that is reproducible.

Look Development Artist

The Look Development Artist works with the Look Development Lead or Supervisor to define all the technical and creative aspects needed to create the appearance for CG assets for a particular project. The Look Development Artist should be able to use a variety of methods and renderers to satisfy a production’s creative needs.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with the show supervisors to create final looks, templates and materials for CG characters and environments to be used in production and interpret artistic direction from Supervisors.
  • Working with the lead of supervisor of a show, define shader requirements, creating shader networks in Maya and Houdini, modifying shader parameters, applying texture maps, and iteratively refining the look to accomplish the art direction goals and integrating solutions into production pipeline.
  • Participate as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides feedback to other team members of the production.
  • Setup scene templates for Lighters and run shots under guidance of Lighting Supervisor.
  • Work closely with texture artists to create necessary texture maps for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Work closely with grooming artists and technical animators to create fur, hair, or cloth rigs for application to creatures, props and environments
  • Write and/or modify custom shaders, define standard render passes for a project
  • Work closely with Lead Lighting TD's and supervisors to ensure that all assets work within the scope of lighting & color pipeline requirements.
  • Work with a team of artists in a hands-on capacity to ensure technically and artistically proper implementation of look developed assets
  • Keep other supervisors apprised of issues arising in pre-production and shot production and offer creative solutions to those issues.


Qualifications

  • 3+ years production experience in feature film VFX, 5+ years preferred.
  • Experience in photo-real material/surfacing look development in visual effects production.
  • Superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail in creating photo-real shaders and materials.
  • A passion for highly detailed work on a mix of characters, hard-surface assets and environments.
  • Must have advanced experience with Autodesk Maya, Vray, Arnold or Mantra.
  • Must have experience creating and manipulating shading networks  and defining templates for other artists.

Lighting Artists are responsible for hands on operation of a CG workstation to create desired lighting effects across shots and sequences. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgment.  Although more of an artistic role than a technical role, some technical understanding is beneficial.  A Lighting Artist must be able to balance artistic requirement with the technical limitations of the software and hardware employed.

  • Set an example of good working practice for other Lighters

Modeller

Working with the Lead Modeller or the CG Supervisor on a project, the Modeller will create accurate and efficient models in the assigned timeframe as outlined by the Supervisor. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement.

  • Create models (characters, sets and props) as assigned by the Modelling Lead or Supervisor.
  • Complete assigned modeling tasks in a timely manner.

FX TD

The FX TD is responsible for creating photorealistic “FX,” (usually some natural phenomena such as fire, water, explosions, etc), using Maya and/or Houdini and any proprietary Method technology or third-party technology. They should have a good understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders. They should be familiar with the latest techniques and technologies, and have a deep understanding of one or more specialties. They should be adept in one or more FX packages, as well as being able to develop entire tools or production pipelines, as required by the project. The FX TD is also required to develop a deep understanding of the Method pipeline and work within it.

Technical Animation Lead

The Technical Animation Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the technical animation (cloth, fur, hair) pipeline for a project, working closely with the Rigging, Technical Animation, and CG Supervisors. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

The Technical Animation Lead would also be designing, simulating and delivering elements in shots that involve cloth, hair, fur or other specialist technology. They will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that the technical animation team have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.

The Technical Animation Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

Groom Artist

As a Groom artist, you will be responsible for creating realistic natural looking long hair, fur, or feathers for Digi Doubles, Animals, Creatures, and occasionally foliage or anything with an instance nature. Grooms need to look realistic and also well setup for motion. FX TD Lead

Reporting to the Head of FX, or the CG/VFX Supervisor on a project, the Lead FX TD is responsible for creating or overseeing the creation of technology to enable the building of photo-realistic effects (usually some natural phenomena such as fire, water, explosions, etc), using Maya and/or Houdini and any proprietary or third-party technology. The Lead FX TD should have an advanced understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders. He or she should also be comfortable managing teams of senior and junior artists, (including scheduling artists, interviewing artists and mentoring artists), as well as software developers. He or she should also be familiar with the latest techniques and technologies, and have a deep understanding of one or more specialties. He or she should be expert in one or more FX packages, as well as being able to develop entire tools or production pipelines, as required by Method Studios or the project he or she is assigned to.  The Lead FX TD is also required to develop a deep understanding of our pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists and developers are doing the same. He or she should be an accomplished artist and able to produce outstanding photo-realistic effects.

Roto-Animation Artist

The roto-animator is responsible for animating a given object or character to footage at a level of detail outline by the department Supervisor. Responsibilities include proper use of studio animation tools and pipeline, maintaining proper spacial formatting as outlined by the layout department and reporting potential issues to the supervisor or leads.

  • Imports the tracking/layout data to appropriate application and, using established techniques and tools

Texture Artist

Reporting to the Model or Texture Lead and to the CG Supervisor (per project), the Texture Artist will create textures as assigned by the CG Supervisor. The position requires a high degree of technical skill and artistic judgement.

Rigging Lead

The Rigging Lead is responsible for the smooth running of the rigging pipeline, working closely with the Rigging Supervisor. This will require maintaining existing technology, integrating third-party technology, and designing and implementing all-new, proprietary technology. This is a broad role which encompasses many departments and disciplines, including but not limited to: modeling, texturing, rigging, creature FX, (including at least fur, cloth, soft-body deformations), and animation. 

The Rigging Lead is expected to have a holistic view of the pipeline and be able to design or help design and maintain a smooth and efficient pipeline for rigging photorealistic CG assets, and leading/mentoring other riggers.The Rigging Lead will work collaboratively with the leads of many other departments. He or she must have a strong understanding of CG pipelines and production methods and a strong management style with excellent organizational and artistic skills. He or she must also be able to work with the global teams of the other Method facilities and attend meetings regularly. Occasional travel to other Method locations might be required.

The Rigging Lead will work closely with the Rigging and Animation Teams to ensure that the productions’ needs are understood and met, and that animators have fast, efficient, intuitive puppets.The Rigging Lead should be comfortable managing teams, (including interviewing, scheduling, and mentoring artists).  He or she is also required to develop a deep understanding of the studio pipeline, work within it, and ensure that his/her artists are doing the same.

The CG Supervisor will ensure the throughput of shots to completion via client approval, and maintain a functioning environment where the artists and client can focus on performance without technical hindrance.

VFX Producer

Reporting to the Head of Production, the VFX Producer is responsible for facilitating the bidding process and the management of information flow for VFX projects. Attending client meetings, breaking down scripts, preparing bids, taking client requests, recording client notes, generating schedules, invoices and work orders are all part of the daily responsibilities of the VFX Producer.
